Man sentenced after accidentally shooting woman’s mohawk he mistook for bird

A Colorado man was sentenced to five years’ probation after accidentally shooting a woman whose red mohawk he mistook for a fowl that had been harassing his cats. 

Derrill Rockwell, 49, told police that he grabbed his .22-caliber rifle and set out from his home Oct. 5 to fire at the bird after spotting it at the top of a hill about 90 feet away, the Daily Sentinel reported Friday.

“His intent was to spook it away,” Deputy District Attorney Jason Conley told District Judge Richard Gurley on Friday, according to the newspaper.

But after shooting at the bird, the man said he noticed it didn’t fly away and he reported hearing a woman moaning in pain.

Rockwell soon discovered that he had shot a 23-year-old woman in the head, mistaking her red mohawk for the menacing bird. 

Conley reportedly told the judge that the woman may have passed out from alcohol before being shot. Police officers also found a bag of suspected methamphetamine near where she was shot.

The woman survived the shooting, but has since moved from Colorado and could not be reached by the newspaper Friday. 

Rockwell was sentenced to serve five years probation after pleading guilty to felony possession of a weapon by a prior offender, the newspaper reported. 

“In 15 years in law enforcement, this was one of the more interesting cases I’ve worked,” Grand Junction Police Department detective Sean Crocker told the judge, according to the newspaper.

Marrow-thon: Students break world record, swab to find a match for Athens youth

For Kajal Patel, an Athens Academy sixth grader diagnosed with an immune disorder at the age of nine months, only a bone marrow transplant stands in the way from regaining her health. The chances of finding a bone marrow donor match for Patel are 1 in 20,000.

But classmates of Patel aren’t idly standing by while doctors search for a match under these odds.

Athens Academy sixth graders and their parents came together Tuesday and Wednesday, organizing a 24 hour “Marrow-thon” throughout Athens in a hopeful effort to find the donor that could save Patel’s life.

“Kajal’s family was more than overwhelmed at the amount of dedication people are putting into this cause for her,” said Laura Pennington, Athens Academy parent and “Marrow-thon” organizer. “They have written us several letters expressing their gratitude and have said that they feel so blessed to be living in such an amazing community who would do all of this for a little girl.”

The 24 hour “Marrow-thon” began at 4p.m. Tuesday and continued until 4p.m.Wednesday. Clasping signs that read “Be the match” and “Swab for Kajal,” volunteer organizers collected swab samples outside of Athens locations such as The Omni Club, The Georgia Theatre, Waffle House and the Tate Center.

“It’s absolutely crazy the number of people we have seen stop by and participate today,” Pennington said. “I was told that we wouldn’t get much support from UGA students as they walk through Tate to get to their classes, but the turnout we’ve seen has really contradicted that.”

According to freshman Sherry Abraham, a finance major from Snellville, it was the passion of Patel’s sixth grade classmates that made her stop by and participate.

“Seeing such cute kids supporting their classmate actually encouraged me to take a few minutes and get swabbed,” Abraham said. “I feel like it would be a rare thing if I was a match, but it can’t hurt to increase the odds of finding a donor.”

Upon Patel’s increased absences from school after their winter break, classmates learned of her condition and forged efforts to locate a matching donor.

“When Kajal had to leave school and go to the hospital, we all started working together to advertise her situation throughout the community,” said classmate Sydney Goodstone. “I helped choreograph a Flashmob dance and all of us together and made a Facebook page and a Youtube video for her.”

As hoped by volunteers, Tuesday and Wednesday’s “Marrow-thon” broke the Guinness World Record for most collected bone marrow tests, with over 2,700 swabs counted, exceeding the world record by over 300. The previous record was 2,400 set by Ohio State students in 2009.

“Whenever I felt exhausted or drained during those 24 hours, I not only thought of Kajal, but I saw all these people willing to do so much for absolutely no benefit to themselves, and I was instantly inspired,” Pennington said. “That inspiration alone made me think, ‘How can I not keep going?’”

Elderly couple forced out of home after tweet claims killer of Trayvon Martin lives there

SANFORD, Fla –  An elderly Florida couple have been forced to move into a hotel after their home address was wrongly tweeted as belonging to the man who shot teen Trayvon Martin.

The tweets were traced back to a man in California and the address was also reportedly retweeted by director Spike Lee to his almost 250,000 followers.

The couple, aged 70 and 72, have been harassed with hate mail, been hassled by media and had scared neighbors questioning them since the tweet, their son Chip Humble told the Orlando Sentinel.

Fearful for their safety, and hoping to escape the spotlight, the couple have temporarily moved to a hotel.

The confusion seems to stem from the fact the woman’s son is named William George Zimmerman and he lived briefly at the address in 1995.

When William Zimmerman pleaded with the man who tweeted the address, the man responded, “Black power all day. No justice, no peace” along with an obscenity.

Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot and killed Martin in a Sanford gated community on Feb. 26, with emotions and anger running at fever pitch while he remains free.

William Zimmerman said he used his mother and stepfather’s address to register a car, get a drivers license and vote when he lived there after college.

“This is really scary, and I’m concerned for my family,” William Zimmerman said. “It’s scary because there are people who aren’t mentally right and will take this information and run with it.

“To endanger people who are innocent because people are angry is not the answer. That’s not how we’re going to heal. It’s not [going] to help the Martin family for someone else to be hurt.”

Cause of the day

I came across this change.org petition and wanted to share it with everyone. It is a petition for Village Voice Media, which owns Backpage.com. This website encourages the sex slavery industry by allowing for pimps to post ads in their “adult” section of the website. Sex trafficking of girls and boys on Backpage.com has become a very disturbing trend.

If you are a drunken, disorderly, or disruptive flier and you cause a delay with your antics, I don’t know why you wouldn’t face charges and fines for your behavior.
